Windows Server 2016 RTM Retail x64 Official ISO Download (9718765) with Verified SHA-256

If you’re after the original first-release disc of Windows Server 2016 — retail channel, zero integrated updates, completely untouched — this is it.

Windows Server 2016 GA’d in October 2016 as a Long-Term Servicing Channel release (Build 14393, sharing the Windows 10 1607 kernel), and marked the platform’s “cloud-native pivot”: Windows containers (with Docker support), Nano Server, Storage Spaces Direct (S2D hyper-converged), Storage Replica, nested virtualization and Credential Guard all debuted in this generation. This post provides the genuine Windows Server 2016 RTM retail disc (first-release media), Simplified Chinese (part number 9718765), complete with a PowerShell-verified SHA-256 hash proving every byte matches Microsoft’s official release.

When does the RTM retail disc make sense? It’s the October 2016 first-release media with no cumulative updates — setup finishes on the RTM baseline, ideal for replicating the original 2016 environment, version archaeology, or cases with strict media-number requirements. For everyday rebuilds, prefer the February 2018 refreshed disc (11636703); for volume deployment with KMS, use the VL disc (11636695).

  • Version archaeologists and media collectors — genuine October 2016 first-release retail media (9718765), never repackaged
  • First-baseline replication — compatibility validation, regression testing or teaching demos against the RTM baseline
  • Retail licensees — licensed through retail/MSDN channels, activated online or by phone
  • Learners and researchers — experience containers, S2D and Nano Server as they originally shipped in this generation, then watch the system evolve through patches
  • Legacy environment restoration — rebuilding historical server environments with the media of the era

Setup selects the edition by product key. The media primarily contains:

EditionBest For
Standard (Core / Desktop Experience)General-purpose servers and virtualization hosts (2 VMs per license) — the most common choice
DatacenterHigh-density virtualization, unlimited VMs, Storage Spaces Direct, SDN, shielded VMs

During setup you can also choose Server Core (no graphical interface) or the full Desktop Experience installation mode. Nano Server ships as a container image in this generation and is not a setup option.

The following hash was generated locally using PowerShell Get-FileHash on the complete file — not copied from a website. This ensures every byte of your download is identical to the official media:

D8575BECE2B2F243E5849FA4E09C49E14ED31AFC3CF0A9489A23C67CE2E2D3F3

To verify your download, open PowerShell in the folder containing the ISO and run:

Get-FileHash .\cn_windows_server_2016_x64_dvd_9718765.iso -Algorithm SHA256

If the output matches the hash above, your file is intact. If it doesn’t, delete the file and download again.

  1. Try it in a VM first: Windows Server 2016 reaches end of extended support in January 2027 — deploy in Hyper-V, VMware Workstation or VirtualBox and take a snapshot immediately. Any internet-facing service needs proper firewalling and patch management.
  2. RTM baseline: this is the October 2016 first-release media with no cumulative updates — after setup you’ll need to cross servicing-stack updates and apply years of security patches, which is slow. Only use it when you specifically need the RTM baseline.
  3. Three similarly named 2016 discs: 9718765 is the RTM retail disc (this one, online/phone activation); 11636703 is the February 2018 refreshed disc; 11636695 is the Volume License disc. The three key channels are not interchangeable — check the number.
  4. Core or Desktop Experience?: production workloads should prefer Core (smaller attack surface, lower footprint) with remote administration tools; choose Desktop Experience for GUI learning or legacy applications.
  5. Licensing and keys: Standard and Datacenter require their own licenses — you can skip the key during setup and activate later with a legitimate retail key. Avoid “activation tools” of unknown origin.
  6. Always verify the hash: a nearly 6GB download can easily be corrupted — two minutes of verification avoids a failed install.

Third-party “lite,” “ghost server” or “pre-activated” builds may:

  • Bundle adware, crypto miners or backdoors
  • Preinstall dubious KMS emulators or “permanent activation” scripts that are themselves security risks
  • Gut the WinSxS component store, causing “source files missing” errors when adding roles, installing .NET 3.5 or applying cumulative updates later
  • Replace system files with no verifiable hash, making failures impossible to trace or reproduce

Servers carry business data and services — knowing the image is byte-for-byte identical to Microsoft’s official media matters far more than saving a few minutes. An official ISO plus a verifiable SHA-256 hash is the only reliable route.
