Windows Storage Server 2016 x64 Official ISO Download (9327778) with Verified SHA-256

If you have a NAS appliance that shipped with Windows Storage Server 2016 and needs a factory reinstall or recovery, or you want to build a dedup-enabled dedicated storage server in your lab, this post is for you.

Windows Storage Server 2016 is Microsoft’s dedicated storage-appliance operating system built on Windows Server 2016 (Build 14393). It never sold at retail — OEM vendors (Dell, HPE, Inspur and others) preinstall it on NAS/storage appliances. It inherits the full Windows Server 2016 storage foundation: Storage Spaces Direct, Data Deduplication (now with ReFS volume support), SMB Direct (RDMA), the ReFS resilient file system, iSCSI Target and Storage Replica. This post provides the genuine Windows Storage Server 2016 Simplified Chinese disc (part number 9327778), complete with a PowerShell-verified SHA-256 hash proving every byte matches Microsoft’s official release.

How is it different from Windows Server 2016? Same kernel, different focus: Storage Server trims general-purpose server roles and concentrates on file and storage workloads (SMB/NFS shares, iSCSI, deduplication, storage clustering) — the “factory OS” for OEM NAS devices. For a regular file server, Windows Server 2016 Standard is the better fit.

  • NAS appliance owners — factory reinstall and recovery for OEM storage devices that shipped with Storage Server 2016
  • Home/lab storage enthusiasts — turning an old PC into a dedicated NAS with the Microsoft storage stack (dedup, storage pools, iSCSI)
  • SMB file-server administrators — scenarios needing data deduplication, multi-protocol SMB/NFS shares or storage clustering
  • Storage technology learners — a lab base for studying S2D, Storage Replica and ReFS
  • OS collectors — genuine Microsoft MSDN-channel media (9327778), never repackaged

Setup selects the edition by product key. The media primarily contains:

EditionBest For
StandardMid-range and high-end NAS / storage gateways — failover clustering and the full storage feature set (S2D, Storage Replica, dedup)
WorkgroupEntry-level single-node NAS with a trimmed feature set, for small-office and home storage devices

The following hash was generated locally using PowerShell Get-FileHash on the complete file — not copied from a website. This ensures every byte of your download is identical to the official media:

To verify your download, open PowerShell in the folder containing the ISO and run:

Get-FileHash .\cn_windows_storage_server_2016_x64_dvd_9327778.iso -Algorithm SHA256

If the output matches the hash above, your file is intact. If it doesn’t, delete the file and download again.

  1. Try it in a VM first: like Windows Server 2016, it reached end of extended support in January 2027 — validate in Hyper-V, VMware Workstation or VirtualBox first and take a snapshot immediately.
  2. Confirm this is really the OS you need: Storage Server is an OEM preinstall system meant for NAS appliance recovery; for a general file server, Windows Server 2016 Standard is a better choice (fuller roles, broader ecosystem).
  3. Five similarly named 2016 discs: 9718765 is the RTM retail disc; 11636695 is the Volume License disc; 11636703 is the February 2018 refreshed disc; 9327779 is Essentials; 9327778 is Storage Server (this one). Check the part number before downloading.
  4. Standard or Workgroup?: choose Standard for failover clustering, S2D and Storage Replica; Workgroup is enough for a single-node entry NAS.
  5. Deduplication note: this generation’s Data Deduplication supports both NTFS and ReFS volumes — enabling it on large file volumes (backup, archive) saves significant space; dedup on VHD/VHDX virtual disks is on by default.
  6. Always verify the hash: a 4.5GB download can easily be corrupted — two minutes of verification avoids a failed install.

Third-party “lite,” “ghost” or “pre-activated” builds may:

  • Bundle adware, crypto miners or backdoors
  • Preinstall dubious activation tools or “permanent license” scripts that are themselves security risks
  • Gut the WinSxS component store, causing “source files missing” errors when adding storage features or applying cumulative updates later
  • Replace system files with no verifiable hash, making failures impossible to trace or reproduce

Storage servers hold the hardest data to rebuild — knowing the image is byte-for-byte identical to Microsoft’s official media matters far more than saving a few minutes. An official ISO plus a verifiable SHA-256 hash is the only reliable route.
