Windows Server 2016 Volume License x64 Official ISO Download (11636695) with Verified SHA-256

If you need a clean, complete, unmodified Windows Server 2016 ISO on the Volume License channel, this is the one.

Windows Server 2016 GA’d in October 2016 as a Long-Term Servicing Channel release (Build 14393, sharing the Windows 10 1607 kernel), bringing containers (Docker / Windows containers), Nano Server, Storage Spaces Direct, Storage Replica, nested virtualization and Credential Guard into the Windows Server platform for the first time. This post provides the genuine Windows Server 2016 VL (Volume License) Simplified Chinese disc (part number 11636695), the standard media for enterprise volume deployment, complete with a PowerShell-verified SHA-256 hash proving every byte matches Microsoft’s official release.

How is the VL disc different from the retail disc? The kernel and features are identical — the difference is the key channel: the VL disc installs with GVLK volume-license keys, activated against an on-premises KMS server or via MAK keys. It’s the standard choice for domain environments, mass deployment and offline activation scenarios. The retail disc (9718765) uses online/phone activation, and the two key channels are not interchangeable.

  • Enterprise IT administrators — those licensed through VLSC / volume channels who need installation media matching their licensing channel
  • Domain environment operators — running an internal KMS service for mass deployment of domain controllers, file servers and Hyper-V hosts
  • Virtualization / private cloud engineers — batch cloning on vSphere or Hyper-V clusters, where VL-channel activation is the smoothest path
  • Learners and lab environments — the standard media for practicing KMS setup, volume activation, MDT/WDS automated deployment
  • OS collectors — genuine Microsoft VL-channel media (11636695), never repackaged

Setup selects the edition by product key. The media primarily contains:

EditionBest For
Standard VL (Core / Desktop Experience)General-purpose servers and virtualization hosts (2 VMs per license) — the most common choice
Datacenter VLHigh-density virtualization, unlimited VMs, Storage Spaces Direct, SDN, shielded VMs

During setup you can also choose Server Core (no graphical interface) or the full Desktop Experience installation mode. Nano Server ships as a container image in this generation and is not a setup option.

The following hash was generated locally using PowerShell Get-FileHash on the complete file — not copied from a website. This ensures every byte of your download is identical to the official media:

6D270BCCCAAAE844BDB6ADBAFE3A490009A2B3476A275EE1DFF3C45C224A2854

To verify your download, open PowerShell in the folder containing the ISO and run:

Get-FileHash .\cn_windows_server_2016_vl_x64_dvd_11636695.iso -Algorithm SHA256

If the output matches the hash above, your file is intact. If it doesn’t, delete the file and download again.

  1. Try it in a VM first: Windows Server 2016 reaches end of extended support in January 2027 — deploy in Hyper-V, VMware Workstation or VirtualBox and take a snapshot immediately. Any internet-facing service needs proper firewalling and patch management.
  2. Patch baseline: this disc is on the RTM baseline (October 2016 media) — after setup, apply later security updates via Windows Update / WSUS. If you’d rather finish setup on a fresher baseline, grab the February 2018 refreshed disc (11636703) instead.
  3. Three similarly named 2016 discs: 9718765 is the RTM retail disc (online/phone activation); 11636703 is the February 2018 refreshed disc; 11636695 is the Volume License disc (this one, GVLK key channel). The three key channels are not interchangeable — check the number.
  4. Core or Desktop Experience?: production workloads should prefer Core (smaller attack surface, lower footprint) with remote administration tools; choose Desktop Experience for GUI learning or legacy applications.
  5. Activation: enter a GVLK key during setup or skip it, then point the server at an internal KMS host, or use a legitimate MAK. Avoid “activation tools” of unknown origin.
  6. Always verify the hash: a nearly 6GB download can easily be corrupted — two minutes of verification avoids a failed install.

Third-party “lite,” “ghost server” or “pre-activated” builds may:

  • Bundle adware, crypto miners or backdoors
  • Preinstall dubious KMS emulators or “permanent activation” scripts that are themselves security risks
  • Gut the WinSxS component store, causing “source files missing” errors when adding roles, installing .NET 3.5 or applying cumulative updates later
  • Replace system files with no verifiable hash, making failures impossible to trace or reproduce

Servers carry business data and services — knowing the image is byte-for-byte identical to Microsoft’s official media matters far more than saving a few minutes. An official ISO plus a verifiable SHA-256 hash is the only reliable route.
